I am writing this midway through my third day at COP29. It has been an amazing experience and I have learned so much.
As a spokesperson for the children and youth pavilion, I have attended many events there and met fellow youths who work in climate around the world. Yesterday, I went to a presentation here about the Universal NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) Youth Clause. Youth should be considered in NDCs because they are heavily affected by climate change and also leaders in climate. They should also have a voice as these NDCs are being drafted!
I have been following an Informal Consultation on Gender and Climate for the past few days. I have gone to three sessions and it has been interesting to see the progression from day one to now. A lot of the discussion is focused on small things, like one phrase or even a word. Even though those things can seem inconsequential, I can see that the parties are very invested in making sure that the document is as good as it can be.
Chloe, Elora, and I did a video tour of COP. You can find it on the Children and Youth Pavillion Instagram (@childrenandyouthpavillion).
I went to a Women’s Constituency meeting this morning. It was interesting to hear their planning and get updates from women at COP. It was also a great space to be in because everyone there was a feminist and was seeking climate justice in unique ways.
This week has flown by, but there have been many important moments. I can’t wait to bring back these stories to my community. Also, I have felt energized and motivated by being in a space where everyone is talking about climate. I will try to replicate that at home by talking about climate as much as I can.
