The Problem
Lincoln Elementary School District 27, like many districts in Illinois, sought to improve the nutritional quality of school meals and support the local economy. The district faced challenges in navigating the complexities of local food procurement, including establishing relationships with farmers, addressing logistical hurdles like transportation, and overcoming concerns about seasonality and consistent supply
SGA's approach
SGA is dedicated to supporting farm-to-school initiatives that connect schools with local producers. While this case study highlights Lincoln SD 27’s independent journey, SGA advocates for programs like the USDA’s Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program and the Lake MIchigan School Food Systems Innovation Hub, which help provide funding and resources to form these connections. SGA also promotes success stories like Lincoln’s to inspire and guide other districts to make similar changes in their school cafeterias

“The impact in the cafeteria has been very positive. Students have shown their satisfaction in many ways: participation has increased; they stop in the kitchen after lunch and let the staff know how great it was; when they first enter the kitchen students now comment daily how good it smells & looks.”
Connie Crawley, Food Service Director, Lincoln Elementary School District 27
