Bellwoods Community Solar Program
The Village of Bellwood is committed to expanding access to renewable energy for its residents and building a greener future for the community. Through active participation in community solar programs, Bellwood residents are embracing clean energy and reducing their carbon footprint.
The Problem
Renewable energy is at the forefront of sustainable development in residential communities. However, the barriers to entry for switching over from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources remain high for many communities. The Village of Bellwood had a strong interest turning to green solutions, but lacked the resources to start on their own. As part of C4, however, SGA and the surrounding communities assisted in connecting the village to potential solar partners
SGA's approach
Through the C4 grant, SGA was able to connect members of Bellwood’s community to Community Solar – a clean energy opportunity for residents who cannot install their own solar panels on their property. Solstice, a community solar program, conducted a town hall for residents to directly connect with representatives about the new option for electricity. More than 100 residents created accounts with Solstice and more than 40 were approved to start receiving clean energy!
Through a subscription service, residents of Bellwood can receive solar energy through a shared solar farm. Beyond the benefits of renewable energy, residents can also receive financial savings through credits on their electricity bills.

About the Sustainability Impact
By switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy, residents can participate in large-scale, impactful, and equitable climate solutions. Solar energy has a multitude of benefits including reduced carbon emissions, lower energy bills, energy independence, and job creation. As the world continues on the path of renewable energy, Bellwood is now equipped with the resources to continue their expansion and strengthening of solar energy usage.
