Beye School Embraces Zero Waste

Nothing can beat the spirit and can-do attitudes of our children. Through their Zero Waste efforts, Beye Elementary in Oak Park has achieved dramatic results in just four years. Just how dramatic? Get ready...children, supported by school staff and Seven Generations Ahead, are diverting 97% of waste from their lunchroom. A phenomenal result that's inspiring other area schools to join the Zero Waste journey. Beye's program started simply: recycle what they could and compost fruit and vegetable scraps onsite for their school garden and grounds. In 2013, they joined the Village of Oak Park's commercial composting program, launching them to a near zero waste lunchroom. Since starting the program, the school has also decreased trash generated by 55% and increased their recycling by 76%.
