"Our experience tells us it's possible to combine sustainability and growth," said Bjorn Lyrvall, Ambassador of Sweden to the United States. He presented Sweden's innovative SymbioCity concept to Chicago on May 22 when his country's SymbioCity bus tour rolled into town for the GreenTown Chicago conference. SymbioCity is a holistic urban development program that reduced Sweden's impact on the environment while growing its economy. "Sustainability has helped us to be globally competitive," said Lyrvall. "We've made innovations in green technology while meeting demand for new technologies globally." For example, 50 percent of Sweden's energy comes from renewable sources. And, in 2012, Sweden saw a 69 percent rise in environmental sector exports. According to the Environmental Performance Index, in 2014, Sweden is the ninth most sustainable country in the world, and ranked first in both Health Impacts and Water & Sanitation. The U.S.? 33rd.
